Scuffing Head
Accurate Testing of Frictional Resistance and Surface Wear
The TABER Scuffing Head Attachment SH-300 is designed to perform scuffing, scraping, and adhesion tests using the Taber Rotary Platform Abraser. This accessory simulates real-world abrasion conditions on a wide variety of materials, including vinyl, coated fabrics, leather, textiles, non-wovens, fiberboard, rubber mats, carpets, plastics, and painted surfaces (such as soft coatings or pad-printed plastics).
Key Features
- Compact, Direct Mounting: Installs directly onto the left wheel hub of Taber Abraser Models 1700 / 1750 for quick setup.
- Precise Alignment: A built-in stop ensures accurate positioning of the scuffing head at a 110° angle.
- Adjustable Load Weights: Includes two weights (0.45 kg and 0.9 kg) to meet different testing requirements.
- Fixed Positioning: The top bracket prevents unwanted rotation during the test for consistent and reliable results.
Scuffing Head Configurations
Three unique scuffing head types are available to meet specific test standards:
- Type A: 76.2 mm radius tip with a rounded edge (~0.3 mm); 7.6 mm wide blade. Referenced in SAE J365 and Ford FLTM BN 108-04.
- Type B: 45° knife-edge tip; 3.8 mm wide blade. Referenced in Ford FLTM BN 108-04.
- Type C: 9.9 mm radius tip with 1 mm rounded corner; 7.6 mm wide blade. Referenced in General Motors GM99911P.

Realistic Frictional Resistance Testing
As the specimen table rotates, the scuffing head drags across the surface, simulating actual wear patterns. The scuffing attachment replicates frictional forces commonly found in automotive interiors and other high-contact applications.
The right arm of the Abraser remains upright during the test, and the vacuum system is not used, simplifying setup.
Common Applications
The TABER Scuffing Head is ideal for evaluating:
- Vinyl and synthetic leathers.
- Painted plastic surfaces and coatings.
- Upholstery, carpets, and floor mats.
- Non-woven and laminated materials.
- Automotive trim and interior components.
This accessory is widely used in automotive quality testing, ensuring materials maintain their appearance and performance after repeated contact and friction.
Key benefits
- Compliant with major industry standards.
- Easy setup and operation.
- Designed for reproducible, accurate scuffing tests.
- Works seamlessly with Taber Abrasers.
