Rhopoint ID Imaging Transmission Appearance Meter
The Rhopoint ID is a high-precision instrument designed to evaluate the transparency and transmitted appearance of materials, providing results that correlate with human visual perception.
Unlike traditional haze meters, the Rhopoint ID analyses how clear, sharp and detailed an image appears through a sample, offering a complete optical characterization in a single measurement.
Ideal for quality control, R&D and production environments, the Rhopoint ID is widely used in the packaging, plastics, coatings, glass and printing industries.
Its advanced imaging system, combined with a backlit target graticule and high-resolution camera, enables precise characterization of small and curved samples — such as films, PET bottles, glass, and liquids — that standard haze meters often struggle to analyze.
Key Features & Benefits
-
Comprehensive Transparency Analysis
Measures Haze, Sharpness, Clarity and Total Visible Transmittance, delivering a complete understanding of how a material alters the appearance of objects viewed through it. -
Human-perception-based measurement
The instrument simulates how the human eye sees through a material, providing more meaningful results than traditional haze-only measurements. -
Distance-dependent analysis (0–40 mm)
Allows the user to measure optical behaviour at different air gaps, replicating real application conditions and improving product development accuracy. -
Suitable for small, curved and complex samples
Works with very small measurement areas (as small as 2 × 2 mm) and handles non-flat geometries (e.g., curved bottles or thin films).
Thanks to its high-resolution imaging system, the Rhopoint ID can evaluate very small areas and curved surfaces such as blown PET bottles, thin films and specialty packaging. -
No Moving Parts
Robust and reliable design with no mechanical motion, minimizing risk of failure and reducing maintenance. -
Intuitive software & live-view positioning
The ID-L software provides live image preview, data analysis, automatic reporting and export of results and images. -
Compact and Portable
Lightweight (approx. 3.95 kg) and compact (470 mm × 125 mm), making it suitable for both lab benches and production environments. -
Cost-Effective
Offers extensive functional capability at a lower cost compared with many traditional multi-parameter instruments.
Measurement Parameters
- Haze (Veil)
Quantifies contrast loss when viewing through a material — an increase in haze indicates a cloudier, less distinct image. - Sharpness
Measures edge definition; a key indicator of perceived quality through the sample. - Anisotropic Sharpness (ID-L version only)
Detects directional effects produced during processing (machine vs. transverse direction). - Clarity
Conventional metric for comparison with older systems. - Visible Transmittance (TID)
Quantifies how much light passes through and reaches the observer’s “eye” (camera), correlating with perceived brightness and quality. - Distance-Dependent Haze
Evaluates haze at varying distances, simulating real-world viewing conditions.
Applications & Industries

The Rhopoint ID is ideal for any sector where the transparency and visual appearance of materials are critical. Key applications include:
-
Plastic Films & Packaging — Evaluate clarity and haze in films, optimize processing and additive use.
-
Glass — Test architectural glass, safety glass, or automotive windows for optical quality.
-
PET Bottles & Containers — Analyze wall texture, surface defects, or clarity in blow-moulded plastics.
-
Liquids and Gels — Assess the transparency of transparent or translucent liquids safely.
-
Coatings & Films — Evaluation of optical impact and surface finishing.
