The pH electrode is a sensor based on an electrochemical cell. This cell begins to degrade from the moment it is manufactured until the end of its useful life. The lifespan of an electrode is limited, typically ranging from 1 to 2 years. Proper handling and cleaning are essential for accurate measurements.

Before measuring or calibrating, the electrode should be rinsed with distilled water. The electrode should never be touched with fingers, paper, or anything other than water.

Calibration

  • To calibrate the instrument, buffer solutions (standard solutions) are used, making sure that the expected measurement values fall within the range of the selected buffers. The first calibration buffer should be pH 7 or pH 6.864 (neutral pH), followed by the appropriate buffer for acidic or basic values depending on the working range. Between each calibration, the electrode must always be rinsed with distilled water, and any excess water should be removed by gently shaking the electrode.

Measurement

  • Immerse the tip of the electrode at least 2.5 cm into the solution to be measured, wait for one minute until the reading stabilizes, and then take the measurement. After each measurement, the electrode should be rinsed.

Storage

  • After finishing the measurement, the electrode must be rinsed with distilled water and properly stored. This can be done using the electrode cap or a small container, making sure the electrode is kept moist with a storage solution, preferably 3.5M KCl, or alternatively with pH 4 buffer. Do not use moistened cotton or allow anything to touch the electrode bulb, as it is very easily damaged.

Deep cleaning

  • If the electrode requires more thorough cleaning, for example when used in wastewater or highly colored solutions, a cleaning solution containing 0.1% hydrochloric acid should be used. Immerse the tip of the electrode for at least 15 minutes.
