The Keane-Tator Surface Comparator is a compact, durable optical device designed to visually and tactilely assess the surface profile of blast-cleaned steel. Ideal for field inspections, it allows for quick, reliable comparison of blasted surfaces with standardized roughness levels.
Using an illuminated 5X magnifier and a reference disc, the comparator helps determine whether the surface profile meets the required specifications before painting or coating.
What is Included
- High-purity nickel electroformed reference disc.

Each reference disc is a precise copy of a master disc, duplicated within ±50 microinches, and is available for sand (S), shot (SH), or grit/slag (G/S) blasted surfaces.
How It Works
Visual Method:
- Place the disc beneath the magnifier.
- Position the magnifier on the blast-cleaned surface.
- Visually compare the surface texture with the disc’s segments.
- Use the “V” markers between sections for greater accuracy.
Tactile Method:
- Touch the blasted surface with your fingertip or a soft wooden pencil.
- Compare the tactile feel with the disc segments to determine the profile depth.
Example reading:
“1.5S70”
- 1.5: indicates a profile between 1 and 2 mils.
- S: denotes shot blasting.
- 70: year the master disc was produced.
